Trading started the previous week without much conviction, but then on October 14, it gained momentum and the Dow closed above the much-watched 10,000 mark. However, trading on the last two trading days of the week was back and forth. The cross above 10,000 was the first time the Dow has been above that level this year and comes seven months after hitting a 12-year low of 6,547.

Although the Dow remains 29% below its October 2007 peak of 14,164, the index has advanced 53% from its March low. Nevertheless, investors were swayed into a sell mode following last Wednesday’s session, as bigger-than-expected losses from some of the nation’s largest banks reminded investors that consumers and businesses continue to struggle to pay off their debts.
