FDX Overview

Formed in 1971, FedEx Corporation (FDX) is a global transportation and logistics enterprise that offers customers a one-stop source for global shipping, logistics and supply chain solutions. Originally known as FDX Corporation, FedEx is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee and was incorporated in October 1997, providing a diverse portfolio of transportation, e-commerce and business services through companies under the well--respected FedEx brand.

Operating in four distinct business divisions, FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, and FedEx Services, the company employs more than 220,000 workers worldwide while operating within the Air Delivery & Freight Service industry.

The FedEx Express division offers various shipping services for the delivery of packages and freight, offering time-sensitive delivery within 1 to 3 business days while serving countries that encompass more than 90% of the world’s GDP. This segment currently offers approximately 53,500 drop-off locations, 51,500 vehicles and trailers, and 677 aircraft in its integrated global network.

The FedEx Ground division provides business and residential package delivery services of packages weighing up to 150lbs. Offering ground service to nearly every part of the U.S., FedEx ground also services nearly all of Canada’s populations as well.

With nearly 520 facilities and more than 30 hubs in the U.S. and Canada, FedEx ground facilitates its operations through a multi hub-and-spoke sorting system along with their extensive distribution scheme.

Furthermore, the company offers service to Puerto Rico, Alaska and Hawaii through a ground and air network operation coordinated with other transportation providers, primarily, FedEx Express and FedEx SmartPost.

FedEx SmartPost, which provides delivery Monday through Saturday to all residential addresses in the U.S., including P.O. Boxes and military destinations, is a subsidiary of FedEx Ground, which specializes in the consolidation and delivery of high volumes of low-weight, less time-sensitive business-to-consumer packages, using the U.S. Postal Service.

Under a July 2006 agreement with the U.S. Postal Service that runs through September 2013, FedEx Express provides domestic air transportation services within the U.S, including First-Class, Priority and Express Mail. FedEx Express also has approximately 5,000 drop-boxes at Post Offices in an estimated 340 metropolitan areas.

Within the company’s freight division, FedEx offers less-than-truckload (LTL) freight services, long-haul LTL freight services, airfreight forwarding services in addition to its FedEx Freight Canada business.

Internationally, FedEx Freight serves Mexico, Puerto Rico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia and operates approximately 61,000 vehicles and trailers from a set of connections of nearly 475 service centers. Delivery is available to more than 220 countries and territories. FedEx also offers an international freight service with real-time tracking called Global Trade Data, an information tool that allows customers to track and manage their packages.

In 2008, FedEx Office, formerly known as FedEx Kinko’s, is the division that provides sales, marketing, and information technology support, as well as customer service support, office and print services, document solutions and business services and supply chain solutions. As of May 2008, FedEx Office’s operations included approximately 1,800 FedEx office and print centers in the U.S. and approximately 160 additional locations in 10 other countries, as well as approximately 40 commercial production centers.

FedEx currently competes with United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS), DHL, Deutsche Post and TNT N.V
